A housing estate is tackling anti social behaviour by installing security cameras.
The plans for Holborough Lakes, near Snodland, will go ahead in the new year.
Since December 2014 more than 94 crimes – ranging from anti-social behaviour to burglary, violence and criminal damage – were reported at Holborough Lakes, near Snodland, and Holborough Lakes residents’ association feels as if measures should be implemented as the estate continues to grow.
In June all residents were informed of the plans for two cameras to be installed on a trial basis near the gym and the sales office.
Should the trial succeed a total of six cameras will be put up around the estate as a crime deterrent.
The new equipment will cost around £12,000 to set up, and will be funded by the association’s reserve fund so as not to affect the service charge paid by people living there.
Janet Naylor, chairman of the resident’s association, said: “It’s a lovely place to live. All of the residents were surveyed, and the feeling was largely positive.”
A letter sent to residents read: “The aim is to make Holborough Lakes a safe and friendly place to be, and ensure that it is treated with respect. The hope is that the cameras will discourage any anti-social behaviour.”
Graeme Moore has lived on the Lakes with husband Mark for almost six years since moving from Catford in 2008, and said that he felt the consultation was too short.
He opposes the proposal, saying it would be a shame.
He said: “It’s a lovely place to live. I know it’s growing but I don’t see how six cameras will help cover the whole estate.
“We’ve never had any issue. I walk my dogs morning and night and have never felt unsafe or that there are no-go areas. The estate is well lit, friendly and feels safe.
“There is occasional antisocial behaviour with parties, noise, and speeding motorists, but nothing which justifies the extent of these proposals.”
