Rogue traders conned a woman out of hundreds of pounds just for cleaning a driveway.
Two men, described by the victim as having Irish accents and being in their 20s or 30s, carried out the con on a resident in Deakin Leas, Tonbridge, on Thursday, September 11.
They knocked on the woman’s door wearing high visibility jackets and offered to clean her driveway with ‘special chemicals’, which they claimed were left over from another job nearby.
The victim agreed to pay £300 for the work but the men went on to demand further payment because they claimed more chemicals were needed.
The men eventually left with £500 in cash.
A day earlier a similar incident was reported in Ditton, where two men offered to repair residents driveways.
Tonbridge Inspector Mark Hutcheon said: “Unfortunately the victim in Tonbridge has paid out a lot of money for what appears to be no more than having her drive cleaned with a pressure washer.
“I would urge residents not to deal with doorstep callers offering work on your home or garden.
“Rogue traders operate by pressurising and intimidating their victims into agreeing work that is often unnecessary, of poor quality and very costly.
“Always ask for any quotes in writing and check that they are from the company they say they are working for.
“I’m also keen to remind relatives and neighbours to look out for more vulnerable people, such as the elderly, who sadly are often targeted."
