One of the vehicles on display at this year’s Wrotham Classic Transport Rally will be more than 100 years old – and still running! It is a 1920 steam-powered Fowler A9 Road Loco.
Other gems to look out for at the rally at the top of Wrotham Hill on Sunday, June 25, include a Leyland Buffalo commercial vehicle from 1930, and for motorcycle fans, a Douglas TS23 from 1923.
There will also be an agricultural section featuring vintage tractors, including a 1941 Cletrac HG42, and a military section, where a 1969 GKN Sankey FV432 Armoured Personnel Carrier and a 1967 Vickers Abbott FV433 Self Propelled Gun will be attracting some admiring attention.
The event this year will be organised for the first time by the Malling Lions, who have taken on the running of the event from the Friends of Wrotham, who have been in charge since in started in 1979.
The show generally attracts crowds of between 4,000 and 5,000 people, drawn not just by the extensive collection of motor vehicles, but also by the other family activities which will include a 60-ft inflatable assault course, donkey rides, a chance to ride in a trailer behind a steam wagon, plus plenty of catering stalls.
This year eight car clubs will be present to profile their own favourite vehicles.
Neil Cornford from the Lions said: “It is fair to say that it has been a bit of a learning curve for us setting up this year's event. We’ve been kept extremely busy.
“We have had to learn a lot from the Friends Of Wrotham, who previously ran the show, and have added a few twists to badge it as our own.
“The Lions, as an organisation, is well versed in running large scale events, but each one is different and we have avoided changing things for the sake of it.
“But now we are nearly there and looking forward to the big day on the the 25th.
“Hopefully it will be a great show for our exhibitors and visitors, our concessions and stall holders, and the charities that we support!”
The Malling Lions recently made a £1,000 donation to the Homes For Heroes campaign, an initiative by the Royal British Legion Industries (RBLI) to extend its facilities for ex-servicemen at its village in Aylesford.
The Lions willll be assisted on the day by Kings Hill Rotary Club and Leybourne Scouts.
The location of the show is officially known as the Wings of the Morning Field, with the postcode TN15 7NS.
