Traffic was stopped in both directions between Sandy Lane and Birling Road.

Neighbours say the fire broke out in the roof of a bungalow near Callis Court at around 4pm.

It is understood all the occupants evacuated safely.

The fire is now out, but the roof has been badly damaged and emergency vehicles are still at the scene.

A fault with the home’s boiler has been suggested as a possible cause.

A Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “We were called today at 4.05pm to a fire at a bungalow at London Road, West Malling.

“Eight fire engines attended, and crews extinguished the fire using a hose reel jet.

“No injuries have been reported and the cause is not yet known.”

The fire service were able to leave the scene at 6.23pm.
