A young golfer from Kent has scored a hole-in-one at a junior golf competition.
Alex Pollington, 12, could be headed for the big time after scoring the hole-in-one at the Poult Wood Junior Open.
Alex, from Snodland, was one of 34 junior golfers from across Kent and Sussex who took part. The event, run by Tonbridge & Malling Leisure Trust (TMLT) is now in its 19th year.
Alex has been having golf lessons since he was eight, said: “To get a hole-in-one felt brilliant. I never expected it, this was my first ever competition.
"I was ecstatic inside but I tried to continue with the rest of my game, as I didn’t want to get too distracted." - Alex Pollington
"It took a long time to sink in, especially as lot of the players there, who’d all been playing for years, said they'd never had a hole-in-one.
“My goal is to play three rounds on the 18-hole course to obtain a handicap, enter more competitions to improve my score and in the future, aim towards becoming a professional golfer or a golf instructor.
"As a backup I will continue studying hard at school just in case!”
TMLT is working hard to encourage more youngsters to play golf. Martin Guyton, chief executive of TMLT, says: “Alex’s hole-in-one was a moment of brilliance and we hope serves as an inspiration to other young golfers.
"It just goes to show that if you work hard at a sport, great things can happen.”
Poult Wood’s dedicated golf pro, David Copsey, says: “A hole-in-one is a rare event – this is the first one we’ve had in 19 years of running the Junior Open Golf Competition.
"We are hoping more young golfers will be encouraged by Alex’s success and come down and work on their game.”
