A new community gym has opened inside an industrial unit as its owners share plans to make it the “best one in the area”.
Impact Gym, based at the Orchard Business Centre in Transfesa Road, Paddock Wood, opened its doors to the public on January 6.
Owners Jacob Wilkins and Daniel Baines say while the process to opening has been “majorly stressful” the launch saw fantastic support from the community.
Now, the facility has been transformed by over £100,000 in investment to include a weight, cardio, combat sports and HYROX section, with facilities including shower rooms and on-site parking.
Prompted by a lack of sport sites in the town, the co-owners explained how the biggest barrier had been finding somewhere to operate.
Jacob, a financial consultant, told KentOnline: “We delved into the reason why no one had opened a gym in Paddock Wood, and I think the issue has been planning. There’s not really a building in Paddock Wood where you are able to open a gym.
“Fortunately, this unit came up with a type of planning permission where we are able to use it as a gym facility.”
In a bid to give back to the community, the pair have already began sponsoring East Peckham and Paddock Wood Rugby Football Club, the Paddock Wood Cycling Club and are in talks with other football, sports and athletic clubs.
Jacob, 25, added: “Dan and I’s promise is pure reinvestment for the next couple of years, any money we make we promise to reinvest back into the gym. I think it’s what Paddock Wood has been missing.
“It’s all about giving back to the community for us.”
And as part of the plans to welcome everyone, Impact Gym has offered a range of classes for beginners, such as Learn to Lift classes which are included in the price of the membership.
“Our number one rule is we want everybody to feel comfortable. If you do feel uncomfortable come and find us. We’ve also got an app which helps each beginner go through each bit of equipment,” he added.
Despite this, the gym also includes “high end” equipment to cater to experienced trainers, as part of a bid to “cater for everybody”.
Although only in its first month, the fitness enthusiasts say the response has surpassed expectations but assured users: “This is our base footprint at the moment, we’re looking to make it the best gym in the area.”
The new facility is a four-minute walk from Paddock Wood station and is open between 6am-9pm Monday to Friday.
On Saturday it is open 8am-6pm, while on Sunday it is open from 8am-4pm.
New members can join from £39.99 a month.
