Firefighters are today still monitoring a blaze in a large pile of woodchips.
The blaze started at a commercial timber yard in Malling Road at around 7.03pm last night.
Crews dealt with the incident in Mereworth using breathing apparatus, two hose reel jets and two main jets from a nearby hydrant to prevent it spreading to surrounding machinery.
More than five fire engines were involved at its height, allowing the fire to burn out in a controlled manner.
Today, firefighters in two fire engines have been at the scene, to monitor the fire.
It is said to still be generating a considerable plume of smoke, due to the large quantity of woodchip involved.
Residents are advised that the incident is likely to continue for some time.
Any people living nearby are advised to keep windows and doors closed as a precaution.
The affected area was approximately 45 square meters.
The cause is not currently being treated as suspicious.
