As a result, the London-bound carriageway was shut for hours while recovery works take place.

Drivers faced delays as a diversion was put in place temporarily.

National Highways later confirmed at around 10.25am that the incident had been cleared up and the M26 was reopened.

It comes after the highways agency issued a warning to drivers to be alert after a severe weather warning including ice and snow was issued for the weekend.

A police spokesman said: “Kent Police officers attended following a collision involving a lorry and a car on the M26 at 2.30am.

“No serious injuries were reported.”
