Police are investigating after an object was reportedly thrown from a bridge at a gritting lorry.

Fortunately the driver was able to escape unharmed and the windscreen, while badly smashed, did not break.

The incident happened at the A228 Snodland bypass beneath the Rocfort Road bridge around 6.45pm yesterday.

The lorry had been out treating major routes on behalf of Kent County Council before temperatures plummeted last night, in a bid to keep the roads safe.

Police attended and carried out a patrol of the area but were unable to find anyone responsible.

Det Sgt Dan Barker said: "Throwing objects at moving vehicles is incredibly dangerous and places people’s lives at risk.

"Fortunately the driver of the gritting lorry was not injured but we would like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has any other information."

A tweet from Kent Gritting, in response to comments from well wishers, said: "Thank you for your concern. The driver is okay and managed to bring the vehicle safely to a stop."
