A packaging company has revealed more information about a fire which destroyed 30 tonnes of paper.

A total of five fire engines and around 20 firefighters were sent to the blaze at the Townsend Hook paper mill in Mill Street, Snodland on Wednesday.

Smufit Kappa Group, which owns the mill, confirmed nobody was hurt when the paper - roughly enough to fill a lorry - caught alight.

Staff noticed the fire at around 5.10pm before calling fire brigade and tackling the flames themselves.

Crews rushed to the scene and managed to put of the fire within an hour. Most left but some stayed until 8.30pm.

Health and Safety Manager Alistair McAndie said: "Thirty tonnes of paper is about 0.5% of the stock held on site so it wasn't a huge, huge fire.

"Nobody was hurt on our team or Kent Fire and Rescue (KFRS).

"We would like to extend our thanks to KFRS for doing this and making sure that no-one was injured."
