The body of a man found in a lake has been officially named at an inquest.

Fred George Thurygill, 82, was found dead at Leybourne Lakes in March.

The retired civil servant's body was found in the water by a passer-by near the Tesco supermarket in New Hythe Lane, Aylesford.

He called emergency services, who declared Mr Thurygill dead at the scene.

At the time of death Mr Thurygill, a widow, lived at Lavenders Residential Home in West Malling.

Assistant coroner James Dylan heard evidence from the pensioner's post mortem.

It found Mr Thurygill died as a result of drowning.

He is the fifth person to die at the lakes in 11 years.

Assistant coroner Bina Patel will hear more evidence surrounding Mr Thurygill's death at a full inquest in August.

On the day of discovery, police said they were at the scene for "inquiries to locate a missing person".

Prior to today's inquest opening, Mr Thurygill had been named locally in the Kent Messenger.
