Environment Agency warns of River Medway flooding in areas such as Yalding, Paddock Wood and Tonbridge

People are being warned to be prepared for flooding after an alert was issued for this evening.

The Environment Agency says flooding is possible for the middle part of the River Medway from Penshurst to Hampstead Lock at Yalding.

This includes the Leigh Flood Storage area, Ensfield Road, Tonbridge, Paddock Wood, the Hop Farm, East Peckham, Branbridges and Hale Street.

The agency has put out a be prepared alert and says flooding of roads and low-lying land is possible but property is expected to remain safe.

A spokesperson said: “Areas most at risk include low-lying roads and land near the River Medway, particularly around the Leigh area.

“Further flooding is possible this evening as river levels are expected to remain high due to rainfall.

“We are closely monitoring the situation and monitoring rainfall and river levels.”

People are warned to avoid using low-lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses.

The EA says it will send an updated message at 9am tomorrow or as the situation changes.
