The public have been asked for their views on a council’s plans to install traffic lights at a ‘blind’ junction.
Kent County Council (KCC) has announced the start of a public consultation period for plans to improve the visibility and access at the junction between Malling Road and Kent Street, near Kings Hill.
The stretch of main road has been highlighted as a point of concern as the existing carriageway width makes it very tight when large vehicles pass each other.
In March 2021, KCC presented four options to Tonbridge and Malling Council’s joint transportation board with option four being the most favourable.
It proposed the installation of traffic lights, the widening of the carriageway between Kent Street and Beech Road to help lorries and larger vehicles turning in and out fo the roads, and a pelican crossing for pedestrians.
The plan also includes placing a cycle path and two new bus stops along the stretch of road.
KCC’s cabinet member for highways and transport, David Brazier, said: “Due to the width of the junction, any incidents in this area can cause a high level of disruption to the surrounding roads.
“If approved, this scheme would be part funded through developer contributions and contribute to biodiversity by planting hedgerow.
“I would encourage people to review the plans and share their thoughts, so we can continue to develop the proposals.”
The whole scheme has been predicted to cost around £3 million.
The consultation period is open until July 3.
If you wish to give your opinions you can do so on the scheme’s website by filling in the questionnaire.
A couple of drop-in sessions are also planned at Mereworth village hall on June 19 from 1.30pm to 4pm and June 21 from 6pm to 8pm.
