Police swoop on boy racers in Snodland and East Peckham

Police have responded to concerns about boy racers and anti-social driving after complaints about speeding and noise from loud exhausts.

Officers have been patrolling known hotspots, with both the A228 between Snodland and Halling and the East Peckham by-pass targeted on Friday and Saturday last weekend.

A Public Space Protection Order is currently in place for the whole of Tonbridge and Malling borough, which means nobody is allowed to participate in car-cruising activity.

Officers took the details of 15 vehicles suspected to be breaching the conditions of the order and passed them on to the local authority.

If found guilty, the drivers face a £100 fine.

Officers also issued a section 59 notice to one driver because of the manner of his driving.

If the vehicle or driver is found in similar circumstances within the next 12 months, the vehicle being driven can be seized.

To be racing up and down the road is not acceptable

Sgt Nick Atkinson said: “Anti-social motorists can severely impact upon people’s daily lives, whether they are causing a nuisance at unauthorised gatherings or posing a risk to other road users by driving in an irresponsible or dangerous manner.

“Our officers remain vigilant for offenders.

“Anyone caught committing these offences will be challenged, and risk being issued with a traffic offence report, being arrested or having their vehicles seized.

“While there is nothing wrong with having nice cars, to be racing up and down the road and revving your engine is not acceptable, and will undoubtedly upset the residents who live nearby.”

The police are also encouraging people to sign up to My Community Voice. The two-way engagement tool allows residents to relay concerns about anti-social driving or other matters such as drug-taking or vandalism.

My Community Voice also provides real-time messages directly from police officers, staff and volunteers, about matters that may affect you in your community.

You can receive these messages either by email or text - and it’s free.

Last summer, a passenger in a car described the “terrifying” experience when they were overtaken at “horrific speed” after getting inadvertently caught in the middle of a boy racers’ meet.

Police pledged to up patrols in the area.

She said of the latest issues: “The noise of engines revving and exhausts popping coming from the direction of the A228 at Snodland now seems a regular thing on a Saturday night.

“I’m all for people having fun but not at the risk of others’ safety.”
