There’s more good news for fans of a town’s miniature railway.
Earlier this month, the leader of Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council, Cllr Matt Boughton (Con), promised members of the Tonbridge Model Engineering Society that their model railway layout adjacent to Tonbridge Swimming Pool in Castle Street was not in danger of being claimed for redevelopment.
There had been fears that the land might be wanted for a new leisure centre for the town, after the council took the decision to demolish the existing Angel Centre and build a replacement.
Not only did Cllr Boughton guarantee that the site would not be chosen for a new centre, but the council has now also approved an application from the society to have the layout adopted as an Asset of Community Value.
The decision was taken by the policy, scrutiny and communities manager Gill Fox.
The listing includes the railway’s workshop, wagon, garage and layout at The Slade.
It guarantees the society added protection against any future development, giving them the first right of refusal to purchase the land if there were ever any decision to dispose of it.
The society has been in existence for 72 years and has 85 members. It gives rides to the public in the summer months.
