A pub manager has finally made his attempt to beat a Guinness World Record after the bar was raised, not once, but twice.

Chris Peach, of the Spitfire in Kings Hill, near West Malling, was initially planning on beating the record for most pubs visited in 24 hours back in September.

The 42-year-old was aiming to go to 60 pubs, starting in London and making his way back to his own.

However, his plans were put on hold when he found out 22-year-old Nathan Crimp, from Brighton, had smashed the record days before his own attempt, making the new record 67.

As a result, Chris, along with regular Adrian Burke, decided to re-plan their route.

They set off on Saturday with the intention of visiting 70 pubs but while on their challenge discovered an Australian had added to the numbers needed even further.

To break the new record, they had to visit 78 pubs – which they managed to do – but now they face an anxious wait to get their total officially verified.

Chris, who has been general manager at the pub for six years, said: "We found ourselves literally running around Victoria looking for pubs – it was very tiring, but good fun."

To qualify for the record, he had to have a 125ml drink at each pub, and have two witnesses every four hours.

Chris and Adrian, along with Spitfire team member Jodie Butcher, wore red and white T-shirts promoting the challenge and a GoFundMe page.

Money is being raised for Chris' niece Amelia Rose, who was born with a cleft lip. Donations can be made here.

Chris continued: "People saw the T-shirts and so knew what we were doing, and because we had the GoFundMe link on the back, it also meant we got some donations as we went round."

All three must now collect their witness statements and receipts and submit them to find out if they qualify for the world record, which can take between four and six weeks.
