Aylesford will go down in history as the birthplace of the world’s largest K’NEX structure after a team from Royal British Legion Industries unveiled a life sized model of a supersonic car.
Ex-service personnel, people suffering from disabilities and local volunteers worked for 1,287 hours over the course of the two-month project to construct the replica at RBLI’s warehouse in Hall Road.
The model is of the Bloodhound Supersonic Car – a 1,000mph rocket-propelled vehicle which will hopefully break the world land speed record.
The build was commissioned to promote The Bloodhound Project, which aims to inspire children about science and engineering .
The 383,422-piece, 42ft 7ins construction was confirmed as the Guinness World Record holder after it was unveiled by former World Land Speed Record holder and project director, Richard Noble OBE, at the historic Brooklands Racing Circuit in Surrey last Friday.
It takes the record from a 160,000-piece K’NEX T-Rex, all 12ft of which is located in the US Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama.
Mr Noble said: “Bloodhound aims to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers, If a small team can build an amazing model like this, with a little help from our fans in a matter of weeks, imagine what a generation can achieve in their lifetimes.”
This isn’t the first time RBLI has been involved in a large-scale K’NEX project; it constructed a 16ft 4ins long, 9ft 10ins tall monster truck in 2012 which toured the United States and is now on display in a motoring museum in Texas.
