Leybourne: Retrial of man convicted of Lauren Patterson's murder set to resume in Qatar

The retrial of a man accused of murdering West Malling teacher Lauren Patterson in Qatar has been adjourned again.

The 24-year-old from Leybourne Chase went missing during a night out in Doha, where she was working as a primary school teacher, in 2013.

Badr Hashim Khamis Abdallah al-Jabr was found guilty of stabbing her and burning her body in March 2014 - despite saying Lauren had died accidentally.

Miss Patterson's remains were found burned in a remote part of the desert with a knife still lodged in her chest.

He was sentenced to death, but in February Qatar's court of appeal granted al-Jabr a retrial after quashing his conviction.

Today the case was deferred for the third time after issues with the projector in the court room.

Lauren's mother Alison Patterson posted an update to her Facebook page explaining the situation.

It read: "Deferred until Sunday, October 9, to rewatch the video again as the court room didn't have a projector or screen they played it on a laptop which obviously was impossible for everyone to see or hear. The lawyer for the accused was trying to say the video had been edited since its last showing. What will they come up with next time. Feeling so fed up."

She has already traveled twice to Doha for the re-trial, which she is funding using online donations.

So far strangers have pledged more the £30,000 to help pay for the legal and travel costs.

At the first hearing, in March the judge deferred the case because the defendant said his counsel wasn't there.

In May, the trial was once again adjourned after just one day of evidence.

Mrs Patterson has now made a third trip to the Gulf State to attend the resumed retrial, starting today.

Another man, Mohamed Abdallah Hassan Abdul Aziz, was also sentenced to three years in prison for helping the murderer hide Lauren's body, as well as interfering with and damaging evidence which could have helped the authorities.

He has since been released.
