Police were called after a shocked onlooker saw three girls climbing over motorway bridge railings to take selfies.
Larkfield resident Sally Laws was driving along New Hythe Lane at 1pm last Wednesday, when she saw the girls on the other side of the fence above the M20.
She later posted on Facebook to warn parents about what she'd seen, stating: "I don't know what anyone can do with this, but if you have a (possibly) pre-teenage girl out in Larkfield today, I just saw three that have climbed over the side of the motorway bridge in New Hythe lane to take selfies. Hanging on with one hand, the other holding the phone up."
Sally said she had "felt sick" witnessing the stunt, but didn't want to stop as she feared she might scare the girls and potentially cause them to fall.
Instead she called police from further down the road, but officers said the girls had left the scene before they could attend.
"It's so sad and scary," she added. "I can only imagine them dropping the phone, and then letting go... Kids think they are invincible, and just don't think of the traffic underneath them, and even if they didn't fall, could still cause a distraction and an accident."
Sally said she hoped the message would filter to someone that knew the girls, and prevent anyone from copying the act.
She later told KentOnline: "The dark-haired girl was walking along the outside of the rail, holding her phone in one hand and the rail in the other. The other two hadn't got that far yet. Then she held her hand up to take a photo."
Another resident commented on Facebook to say they had also seen the girls, adding: "I saw this too, absolutely terrifying, no common sense at all," while another said: "This actually makes me feel so sad. Well done for reporting it to the police & posting here."
"This is so sad to think the girls think it's ok to do this," added another. "I really hope the families see this and speak to them to explain just how dangerous it is."
Police confirmed they had been called to "a report of concerns for people stood on a motorway bridge" on New Hythe Lane, Larkfield.
A statement added: "No further reports were received."
