Two specially-bred flowers grown at Penshurst Place have taken centre stage in a newly-revived border officially opened during a Glorious Gardens Week.
The restored Blue and Yellow Border, which was officially opened on Thursday, includes two new irises bred at the historic site, Penshurst Blue and Penshurst Yellow.
Inspired by the colours of the Sidney family coat of arms - the family which has occupied Penshurst Place since 1552 - the Blue and Yellow Border has been a prominent feature of the garden for many years.
Its regeneration has seen it return to a more strict colour scheme.
Head gardener, Cory Furness, said: “We have taken the border back to the original Blue and Yellow concept, having removed oranges, reds and even pinks from the border. The plant choice should provide a long season of colour and a mixture of heights and textures. The new irises, I. ‘Penshurst Blue’ and I. ‘Penshurst Yellow’, provide a striking and personal touch to the new Blue and Yellow planting scheme.”
Viscount De L’Isle, added: “At Penshurst Place we believe the gardens need to constantly evolve to maintain interest. Cory’s redesign of the Blue and Yellow border has achieved this strikingly.”
There was also a head gardeners’ tour, Morris dancing, and a personal tour by Lady De L’Isle, at the weekend to mark the end of the Glorious Gardens Week.
