Irritated residents have seen their homes invaded with insects after an unprecedented number of flies appeared, prompting an investigation by environment officials.
People living in Kings Hill and Offham have been arming themselves with tea towels, electrified tennis rackets and swatters to tackle the infestation.
Others have even considered deploying carnivorous plants while reports suggest the Kings Hill Asda supermarket sold out of bug repellent after the scourge started in spring.
The Environment Agency says it is aware of a large number of flies following a number of complaints from residents.
Inspections have revealed the source of the problem is most likely from a nearby waste composting site but the agency is not ruling out other possible factors.
A spokesperson said: "We are working with the waste site operator to identify any potential sources and to ensure that any necessary improvements are made whilst further investigations continue.
"Residents are encouraged to report any further incidences of the issue to us via our 24 hour hotline on 0800 807060."
