Neighbours have described how homes shook this afternoon as army experts blew up a Second World War bomb.
The unexploded German armament was discovered on a building site at Warwick Way in Kings Hill yesterday and a cordon was quickly thrown up, sealing off a number of streets nearby.
An army explosive ordnance disposal team was called in and a protective cage was erected around the weapon before it was detonated safely.
Shoppers were able to hear the sound of the explosion from the nearby Asda, approximately half a kilometre away.
Police had also been on site all day, maintaining the 200-metre cordon around the site.
People living near to the building site took to social media to describe how the blast caused their homes to shake with the force of the explosion.
The land where the bomb was uncovered is the site of a new residential development, owned by Clarion Housing Group and being built by Latimer Developments.
An Army spokesman said: “We can confirm that a request for assistance was made to 11 Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Regiment RLC after an unexploded device was found in the Kings Hill area.
"Shorncliffe Troop from Kent attended the scene and identified the device as a Second World War munition and a decision was made to detonate it in situ.
"The controlled explosion took place this afternoon and our team will remain on site to ensure that it has been made completely safe. We thank the public for their patience in this matter.”
