A driver has been warned to expect a jail sentence after he crashed, killing his passenger, while travelling the wrong way on a motorway.
Christopher Clement wept as he pleaded guilty at Maidstone Crown Court today to causing the death of Mohammed Chowdhury by dangerous driving.
The 37-year-old ex-soldier’s Toyota Corolla collided head-on with a Volkswagen Touareg driven by John Bostock on the M20 in the early hours of March 4 this year.
An inquest heard the Toyota was in the third lane of the London-bound carriageway, between junctions four for Leybourne and three for Borough Green, when the crash happened.
Mr Chowdhury, a 32-year-old security guard from London, died at the scene from multiple injuries.
Adrian Rohard, defending, indicated that Clement, of Warham Grove, Orpington, wished to be sentenced immediately.
But Judge Philip St John-Stevens adjourned sentence to next Wednesday, October 18 for reports after saying: “These are sensitive cases and time is needed to reflect.”
Mr Rohard’s request for unconditional bail to continue so that Clement could spend time with his family “before going to jail” was granted.
“He must understand there will inevitably be a custodial sentence,” said the judge. “It is how long.”
He told Clement: “You will get full credit for your plea of guilty. You appreciate the seriousness and it will be a custodial sentence.”
An interim driving ban was imposed.
