Murder, shootings, train chases, plane crashes, fast cars and classic movie moments are all brought to the small stage at a Rochester theatre this week.

It is June 1914, Europe is close to war and the young, rugged Richard Hannay has returned to London after his adventures abroad.

Bemoaning how lonely and dull his life is, he decides to visit a music hall where a chance meeting with the mysterious Annabella Schmidt throws his world into chaos.

He finds himself on the run from the police, wanted for murder, and heading to the Scottish Highlands to stop spies stealing a state secret.

The 39 Steps, adapted from John Buchan's novel, is being performed at the Medway Little Theatre (MLT) on Rochester High Street until Saturday (June 28).

The 150 characters are played by a cast of just five, and the fast-paced, rapid performance will have you laughing from start to finish.

Richard Jeferies flawlessly portrays the hapless hero, Mr Hannay, as he woos and talks his way out of sticky situations.

Alexandra Lawes' performances of her three very different characters are done with great skill, complete with German and Scottish accents, and a manically brilliant evil laugh.

Dan Abraham, Damian Veck and Catherine Johnston tackle their rapid, often on-stage character swaps, with perfection.

When called,for the casts' excellent improvisation allowed the play to continue seamlessly - I'm sure the lady in the front row will not put her bag on the stage steps next time!

Minimal but effective prop-use allows the play to flow smoothly and creates slapstick humour.

Directed by Kerrie Thompson, MLT's final play of the Spring/Summer season, is as ever, brilliant and should not be missed.

The 39 Steps was adapted for the stage by Patrick Barlow, is based on John Buchan's novel and Alfred Hitchcock's movie.
