Fire crews are still at the scene of a blaze involving around 60 tonnes of straw bales in Forge Lane, Bredhurst.
They were called to the scene at around 5.20pm, last night.
Two fire engines were sent to the scene and this morning firefighters are still working to try and stop the flames spreading.
A fire service spokesman said: "They are working hard to prevent the fire from spreading using main jets, hose reels, beaters, drag rakes and a hydrant."
One lane of Forge Lane has been closed due to the fire and police are at the scene managing the traffic to ease congestion.
Firefighters had been monitoring the scene over night and have said that the smoke will not affect any nearby homes.
Currently there is just one fire engine there trying to break up the hay bales to get the areas which are still smouldering.
Ian Farthing who works at Bredhurst Garage said the field was still smouldering this morning.
Mr Farthing, said: "There is still a bit of a smell in the air, but it's business as usual.
"Firefighters are still damping down and there are several police cars up there and an investigation unit."
