A mum burnt her fingers after she tried to put out a fire which had started in her oven.

The woman, who is in her mid-20s, was at home with her toddler when she put the oven on to heat it up in order to cook dinner but oil at the bottom of the cooker ignited.

She tried to put out the flames by throwing water on them but this resulted in a flash flame which burnt her fingers.

She left the house with her child and her two dogs and called in firefighters.

A crew from Strood were sent to the scene at about 9pm on Wednesday. A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service, said: “The lady was outside when we arrived and as it had been a flash fire we just ventilated the property and gave advice.

“The message is- never put water on a fire like this. Isolate the main supply, close the oven door and leave the property.

“It’s is also a good idea to make sure there is not a build-up of old oil in the oven.”
