Thousands turned out to enjoy recreating the 1940s and to remember those who sacrificed so much.

Salute to the 40s took place throughout the weekend at Chatham Historic Dockyard, and gave visitors an opportunity to dress up in vintage clothes for a trip back in time to wartime Britain.

Air-raid drills and reenactments of life on the home front added an air of reality to the nostalgia, but the occasion was overall a chance to celebrate, with music, vintage fairs, fancy dress, dancing and street parties.

Salute to the 40s

Fly-pasts from Spitfires wowed the crowds on both days, and there were even visits from the Royal Family and Winston Churchill – or at least people who looked remarkably like them.
