A car that was abandoned after being crashed into a lamppost on a busy road yesterday has been reported as stolen.

Police are still looking for the driver of the car who left the scene before officers arrived.

One lane of the A278 Hoath Way was shut northbound for three hours between Ambley Way (the Gillingham Business Park Roundabout) and the A2 (Bowaters Roundabout).

Police were called to the Gillingham-bound carriageway at 10am yesterday and the car was reported stolen shortly after.

Medway Highways were informed and attended regarding the damage to the lamp post.

The lane on the A278 was reopened at 1pm once the lamp post had been removed.
