Two separate accidents caused delays for motorists on the Wainscott bypass this morning.

The crashes happened at the Four Elms Hill roundabout near Chattenden when one car came off the road and two others collided shortly before 7.30am.

A spokesman for police said it was thought either ice or a spillage on the carriageway may have been the cause of the accidents.

No one was trapped in their vehicles, but it is believed one person was injured.

South East Coast Ambulance Service who were on the scene called in police to help manage the traffic and get the cars moved.

Officers closed one lane leaving to the roundabout until the vehicles could be taken away.

Charlotte Marsh, 22, who was on her way to work on Medway City Estate, drove by the crash scene.

She said: “At first I thought it was just a normal queue for the roundabout during rush hour even if it was a bit of a way back, but as I got closer, I could see the blue flashing lights and police cars and it was obvious that it was a bit more than that.

"One of the cars, a silver one, was on the bank of the roundabout with a very shaken woman standing next to it talking to a police officer and the other, a blue car, was badly damaged in the middle of the lanes.”
