Air ambulance called after man was run over by a car in Street End Road, Chatham, near Luton Rec

A pensioner has been taken to hospital after he was hit by a car in Chatham.

Police were called to the roundabout at Street End Road just before 2pm.

An 80-year-old man has been taken to Medway Maritime Hospital by an ambulance crew, assisted by paramedics from the air ambulance.

The air ambulance was scrambled after the incident and the helicopter landed at Luton Rec, Capstone Road.

The man may have spinal injuries, and was taken to hospital as a priority.

The driver of the car is reported to have left the scene and a police spokesman said inquiries into the incident are ongoing.

One witness commenting on Facebook said they had seen the driver get out his car and manhandle the victim before leaving the scene.

"Just seen a hit and run on Luton road," they wrote, "the man got out dragged the man to middle of road and drove off. Good job there are some good people about so we all stopped to help."

The road was reopened at 2.45pm.
