Firefighters who were fighting a blaze which broke out at a farm in Cooling have had to revisit the site several times because wind flared up flames again.

About 300 bales of straw went up in flames on Sunday morning at Bromhay Farm at Lipwell Hill near Rochester.

The blaze was discovered at about 7.15am and saw about 40 firefighters sent to the scene to tackle the flames.

Crews from Medway and other parts of the county spent hours trying to stop the blaze from spreading.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said teams from Medway, Strood Thames-side and Dartford were sent to the farm to help put out the blaze and when they arrived it was well alight.

A bulk water carrier from Ashford has also been sent on Sunday morning, however, later that night, shortly before 8pm a crew from Strood were sent back to the scene after the wind flared up the flames again.

A spokesman added: “We got called out again on Sunday evening and again at about 8.15am on Monday morning as the winds had caused the flames to flare up again.”

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
