A 500-mile bike ride definitely deserves a pint – so Tony Stringer and Nick White have set the finish line for their challenge at the pub.
The two friends are cycling from Edinburgh to Medway in aid of the north Kent CLIC Sargent fundraising group, Danny’s Angels.
They set off from the historic city today and are due to arrive at The Three Mariners pub in Rainham on Saturday. They will be pedalling up to 120 miles a day and camping each night.
It is not the first time the energetic pals have embarked on a cycle ride for Danny’s Angels.
Last year they rode almost 300 miles from Bournemouth to Gillingham, raising just over £2,000. This year they hope to beat that by raising around £3,000.
Bernadette Stevenson, who set up Danny’s Angels in memory of her son Danny, said: “We are so grateful Tony and Nick have agreed to do another cycle challenge for us.
"They’ve been really supportive of Danny’s Angels and we’re hoping the weather is favourable for them.”
Danny, a basketball coach at Featherby Junior School in Gillingham, died in 2009, aged 21.
Tony is a family friend of the Stevensons and persuaded Nick to join him on both rides. The pair have taken part in countless charity challenges together, from abseils and dragon boat races, to 10k runs and marathons, and they are always looking for their next feat.
Tony joked: “Let’s hope we haven’t bitten off more than we can chew this time. 500 miles is a long way but we’ve been getting some practice in, and we’re looking forward to the challenge."
He added: “We’re proud to be supporting Danny’s Angels.
"They work so hard organising local fundraising events for CLIC Sargent, which is a great charity providing help and support to young people with cancer.”
If Tony and Nick look familiar it may be because you spotted them training at Tesco in Gillingham. They pedalled on static bikes at the entrance to the supermarket, collecting £500.
