It's not often you can get your pooch pampered while enjoying a drink and a Sunday roast.

Dog owners are being invited along to the City Wall Wine Bar in Rochester where their pets will get one-to-one attention from a team of experts.

Paws in the Pub is a new afternoon doggy workshop held once a month at the High Street venue.

Advice on grooming, dental care and hygiene, first aid and tips for taking on a rescue dog were all available at the first free drop-in session last Sunday.

Among those who took part was Kim Constable, who runs The Only Way Is Grooming from a summer house at her Rochester home.

Kim said with the influx of people getting a dog during lockdown, it was more important than ever to ensure how to care and understand pets.

Mum-of-two Kim, 53, left her job in property management to start her business three years ago.

She said: "I was made redundant and I did not want that to happen to me again. I have always loved dogs and wanted to do something I enjoy doing."

She took a training course in Chelmsford, Essex, before moving to Valley View Road to be nearer to her family

She said: "Every dog is different. You have to understand the mood, and physical abnormalities and assess health checks and talk to the owner to find out its history before doing anything."

The average grooming appointment costs £50 and takes about an hour-and-a-half.

The package includes a shampoo, conditioner, fluff-dry style and trim, ears checked and cleaned, nails trimmed, a splash of cologne and a bow to top it off.

Kim also offers blueberry facials, soothing aloe vera treatments and deep cleaning nails.

Others who attended were Gillingham-based Happy Petts which sells raw cat and dog food and nutritious treats.

Reigning Cats and Dogs, which offers novel teepee tents and waterproof fleece jackets, Kent-based charity Large Breed Dog Rescue and a specialist pet photographer were also there.

The next session is between noon and 5pm on Sunday, December 11.
