Delays have cleared after an earlier crash at a key river crossing.

Traffic on the A289 through the Medway Tunnel was queueing from Maritime Way in Gillingham to Anthonys Way in Rochester throughout the morning rush hour.

Three vehicles are said to have been involved in the crash, which resulted in one lane being closed on the Strood-bound carriageway, while a damaged vehicle was recovered.

The road has since reopened.

Fortunately, there were no injuries.

The accident happened just before 7.30am.

Drivers faced delays until about 10am. Traffic has now returned to normal.

One motorist heading to work on Medway City Estate said: "I queued for about 20 minutes from near the police station and then into the tunnel where the three cars had crashed in the middle.

"The drivers and passengers were at the side of the road and a police car was parked across the carriageway forcing other cars into the right-hand lane.

"There were no ambulances or fire engines and traffic soon cleared as you got past the accident scene."
