A fire at the former Black Lion pub is being treated as suspicious

Witnesses are being asked to come forward after an apparent arson attack on an empty pub.

Firefighters were called to the former Black Lion in the early hours of Saturday when flames were seen coming from the front of the property in Mill Road, Gillingham.

Crews discovered a large fire on the ground floor of the four-storey building and spent more than an hour and a half putting out the flames.

Police have confirmed that the fire is thought to have been started deliberately. Officers are now asking anybody with information about the incident, which happened just after 12.30am, to come forward.

Officers were the scene on Saturday morning

The historic pub, which dates back to 1789, closed in March this year and was bought by property developer Bailey Partners, which is run by three brothers. They visited the scene in the aftermath to assess the damage.

John Bailey, said: “It’s come as a bit of a shock that’s for sure. I got a call from my brother at around 8.30am.

“We bought it in March and we were undecided in terms of what we were going to with it. It’s got planning opportunities with it.”
