Filming for a new Apple TV movie directed by Steve McQueen and starring a whole host of top names is under way at one of the county's most popular destinations for film crews.

A convoy of white vehicles could be seen along the banks of the River Medway this week at Chatham Historic Dockyard.

It is believed they are there for a new production titled Blitz.

The film follows the stories of a group of Londoners during bombing in the Second World War.

It is to star Ladybug and Little Women actress Saorise Ronan with other well-known names such as Stephen Graham and Kathy Burke. The film is being produced by Apple TV.

The NFS and AFS Vehicles Group, a group from Nottingham which re-enacts the work of the Second World War and early post-war fire services, posted on its Facebook page its members were in Chatham to help with the filming of McQueen's new feature.

A photo taken this week shows flames coming from the set.

The dockyard was once a thriving shipyard, but has since become a renowned filming location with blockbusters for both the big and small screens wanting to make use of its authentic cobbled streets and Victorian buildings as the perfect set for period pieces.

Previous big productions such as Les Miserables starring Russell Crowe and Netflix's period drama Bridgerton have utilised the attraction while both of Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes films used it as well.

The third instalment of the British detective is currently in pre-production with Marvel actor Robert Downey Jr returning as the titular detective, alongside Jude Law as Dr Watson.

BBC's Call the Midwife has also used the dockyard frequently as a set location since it first hit our screen more than a decade ago – so much so, the attraction now offers behind-the-scene tours.

In October the dockyard was once again used for an upcoming production, this time with Mission Impossible star Tom Cruise, who was spotted on several occasions flying over the River Medway in a private helicopter.

It is unknown what project was being filmed but it was reported in the summer that the American A-lister was in London filming his latest reprisal of Ethan Hunt for Mission Impossible 8.

The seventh edition to the spy franchise is to be released on July 14 this year and is to be titled Dead Reckoning Part One.

Call the Midwife actress Helen George revealed during an interview on This Morning that Hollywood actor Matt Damon had also been on the Mission Impossible set.

Both the Kent Film Office and Chatham Dockyards were contacted about the latest film crews but both were unable to offer a comment about the production.
