TREES in the Medway area are under attack from vandals and the bill for damage is climbing rapidly.

This year, the Council has planted 347 trees at a cost of nearly £22,000. But many have been snapped off or uprooted, and last year it cost £16,500 to deal with the problem.

Cllr Janice Bamber, portfolio holder for frontline services, said: "We need the help of the people of Medway to make sure our trees are not subject to acts of wanton vandalism, so that they will be there for future generations to enjoy."

She said that trees play a vital role in the environment. Not only do they add character and beauty, but they improve air quality, provide shade, screen unsightly views and support wildlife.
