A nauseating pong is causing a stink among people living across the Medway Towns.

But there's nothing to worry about - it is simply the smell of farmers' fields.

More than 50 people have commented on Facebook since the stench wafted in yesterday morning.

Some thought a burst mains and leaking raw sewage in the Star Hill area of Rochester were to blame.

Others called Southern Water's customer service operators who sent out a crew to nose around.

A spokesman for the water company said: "Our enquiries revealed it was nothing to do with us.

"Delving deeper we have discovered that it's farmers spreading fertilizers over fields as they do at this time of year - it's perfectly harmless."
