Boccia club members bowled up with beaming smiles on their faces as they showcased brand new kit.

The Prince Arthur Road Indoor Bowling Club has been providing the Paralympic sport of boccia in Gillingham for eight years.

The Prince Arthur Boccia Knights has been running for four but has never had its own uniform.

This changed when a chance encounter with the Gillingham Lions Club secured sponsorship of £450.

Members are now sporting new tracksuits, including jackets and jogging bottoms.

Boccia is a form of indoor bowling for people with disabilities. Players throw coloured balls at a white ball and the team which gets the closest wins.

The money was presented to Owen Porter at the club, in Prince Arthur Road, Gillingham.

The 18-year-old has cerebral palsy and is the Knights’ youngest player.

His sister Billie-Jo Porter - whose mum, dad and brother are all involved with the club - said: “Everyone was over the moon with it.”

"They have just been playing in polo shirts for the last eight years so we thought we’d try our luck and ask the Lions Club to help us.

“We didn’t think they’d say yes, we’re so grateful.

Members of the Lions Club were even invited to try their hand at a game when they visited the club in Prince Arthur Road on Saturday, December 14.

“This was there first time playing the game”, she said. “They threw most their balls out of the court.”
