A building site with around 100 workers was evacuated after a possible bomb was found in the ground.

Workers at Victory Pier in Gillingham were digging when they found a large cylindrical object, thought to be a wartime munition.

Firefighters and police were called to Pier Road, just behind the Tesco Express at 12.35pm.

But when the Ministry of Defence bomb disposal unit were called they found it was nothing more than a propane gas cylinder.

A man who witnessed the evacuation and wished to remain anonymous said: "I suddenly saw more than 100 people streaming out of Victory pier. They were near to the Medway Queen.

"The police put a cordon up, andthe whole area has been cleared of people, except for police and a few security staff there.

A police spokesman added earlier: "Workers were on the construction site behind the Tesco Express store when they dug down onto a large gas cylinder, or some sort of UXB (unexploded bomb), or other wartime munition."
