A bomb squad was called to a park in Rochester after a wartime grenade was discovered in the River Medway.

The Ministry of Defence was drafter in after police were called out yesterday afternoon after the grenade was spotted embedded in the river bed.

A bomb disposal squad arrived today when the tide was out and a controlled explosion was carried out 3.30pm.

A large part of the park was cordoned off by police.

A spokesman for Kent Police said officers were "called at 2.50pm on Wednesday 6 January, to a report that a suspected wartime grenade had been seen embedded in a river bed of the River Medway, in Rochester.

"Officers attended the location which was close Rochester Esplanade and Hathaway Court and the Ministry of Defence was notified. An EOD team attended the following day when the tide was again out and a controlled explosion took place at around 3.30pm."

An army spokesman said: "I can confirm that the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team were called out yesterday at 15:55 to Rochester Esplanade, in Kent at the request of Kent Police.

"The item was identified as a possible grenade which had been found by a member of public. The grenade was destroyed by a controlled explosion."
