Cannabis factory found in building in Chatham High Street following fire

A cannabis factory has been discovered in a high street building where a blaze broke out this morning.

Firefighters were called to the three-storey property in Chatham High Street after smoke was seen coming from the basement.

Evidence of cannabis cultivation was then found when police officers searched the building.

The high street was closed while firefighters tackled the blaze in the building.

The Indian restaurant, Akash Tandoori, is believed to have been shut for some time.

Nearby businesses and shops were left without power during the blaze, and people who work nearby have since told Kent Online that there has been several power cuts on the street this week.

A police spokesman said: "Officers have uncovered a suspected cannabis factory at a property in Chatham.

"Kent Fire and Rescue Service attended and extinguished the fire and a subsequent search of the property has found evidence of cannabis cultivation.

"No arrests have been made and officers remain at the scene carrying out their enquiries whilst the property is made safe."
