A stretch of the M2 that was shut after a car caught on fire has been reopened.

Photos showed traffic queuing on the motorway's eastbound carriageway near Gillingham at about 1.30pm, as a huge plume of black smoke issued into the air.

The fire service and police rushed to the scene by Junction 4, for the A278 Hoath Way, shortly before 1pm to a report a broken-down car had caught alight.

Lane One was closed, with motorists diverted off and back onto the M2 via the Junction 4 exit and entry sliproads.
