An elderly man remains in a critical condition in hospital after a car overturned on a busy road.

The emergency services were called to a two-car crash on the A2 Watling Street in Gillingham at around 2.45pm.

Witnesses described seeing a car on its roof in the middle of the carriageway, outside the fire station.

Police are now appealing for witnesses to the crash, which involved a silver Vauxhall Corsa and a gold coloured Microcar M.GO close to Beechwood Avenue.

They say the Microcar overturned and the driver, a man in his 70s, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Police, paramedics and firefighters were called to the scene. One witness said there were up to eight police cars.

Firefighters said they helped to get an elderly man and woman out of the car.

A spokesman for police said: “A man has been taken to hospital in a serious condition.”

Transport for Medway tweeted: "Gillingham, A2 Watling St: The road is blocked outside the fire station heading towards Chatham due to an overturned vehicle, Expect delays."

Crash investigators were still on the scene at 5.30pm and the road eventually reopened at around 8.30pm.
