Rochester Cathedral's director of music has been suspended after he was arrested over allegations of gross indecency.
Scott Farrell is being investigated by police in Cambridgeshire.
The cathedral has released a statement, saying the 46-year-old was suspended in line with its procedures.
It said: "In November we were made aware that Scott was the subject of a police investigation into an historic safeguarding offence.
"As soon as we became aware of the investigation, he was suspended from all his duties as director of music for Rochester Cathedral.
"Suspension is the normal procedure under such circumstances and does not presume any particular outcome.
"We understand the allegation in question does not relate to Scott’s time with the cathedral but we are cooperating fully with the authorities in the course of their investigations.
"We ask that people respect the privacy of those affected by this matter and keep them in their prayers during this difficult time."
A spokesman for Cambridgeshire Constabulary said: "A 46-year-old man from Rochester was arrested last year on suspicion of gross indecency with a child. He has been released under investigation."
Last week the force confirmed officers were still dealing with the allegations.
Attempts to contact Mr Farrell for comment were unsuccessful.
