A woman had tea and cake at a Chatham pensioner's home - before stealing her gold engagement ring.

The elderly victim chatted with the stranger, who had knocked on her door, for about three hours before she left.

She had showed the woman her ring, which she later discovered was missing along with a bank card and gift voucher.

Now police investigating the distraction theft have released an efit of a woman they want to speak to who they think can help with their inquiries.

A woman called at the house in Constitution Hill at about 7.30pm on April 3, but details have only just been released by police.

Although the victim did not recognise her caller, she invited her in for a cup of tea and a slice of cake.

The woman is thought to be in her 50s, of medium build with fair, shoulder-length hair.

PC Harpreet Hothi said: "This appears to be a case of someone taking advantage of a lonely and vulnerable stranger.

"I'd urge anybody who recognises the person in the image or who has any information regarding the incident to contact me as soon as possible on 07964 133698."
