Chatham Town boss Kevin Watson aiming to end mixed season on a high

Chatham boss Kevin Watson says he is trying to convince himself the club’s Ryman League Division 1 North season hasn’t petered out.

The Chats player-manager was looking to build on the excellent 1-1 draw at Grays earlier this month, but three successive defeats since, and only one goal in the process, means it hasn’t happened.

Watson said: "I am fighting against those thoughts (of the season petering out), and I still want to end the season on a high."

Chatham travel to Redbridge on Saturday. The East London side hit the headlines earlier this season, with an impressive FA Cup run, including a 2-0 win over Ebbsfleet in the fourth qualifying round, before going out, beaten 5-0 at League 2 side Crawley in early December.

It left them playing "catch-up" in the league, and a four-game winning run in the past month saw them climb into the top six, only just missing out on the play-offs.

Watson said: "Redbridge deserve a lot of credit for doing so well after their FA Cup run, and putting themselves in a great position."

The two teams drew 1-1 at Maidstone Road in December, and Chatham head for East London in search of a sixth away win of the season, with a chance of overhauling Waltham Abbey to finish 14th.
