Police and firefighters were called to child left alone in a locked car this afternoon.

A traffic warden spotted the child in the car park in Rhode Street, Chatham, at around 3.20pm and alerted the emergency services.

As fire crews arrived police were already at the scene and dealing with the situation.

It is understood the child had been sleeping in the car for a few minutes while the mother went into a nearby shop.

The mother had already returned to the vehicle once police officers arrived and no further action is being taken.
