A decision on whether to remove a collapsed historic pier is to be taken next week.

Rochester Pier, off the Esplanade, was originally constructed in 1881.

In recent years, it fell into a state of disrepair before collapsing into the water last May, just weeks after funding was allocated to restore it.

Medway Council manages the pier's upkeep and had closed the structure around two years prior and river tours ceased.

Cabinet members are set to discuss plans to completely remove the pier next week (Tuesday, February 6).

Council officers have recommended the full removal of the pier which will cost £137,172.

They say this will give the council a starting point from which to fully restore the pier.

A report presented to councillors says: "It is the intention of Medway Council to fully restore the pier when funding becomes available and create a volunteer-led pier trust to manage and maintain the structure.

"However, for restoration work to begin, the collapsed sections of pier, comprising; two brows and floatation platform need to be removed from the river."

The report also says removing the pier would get rid of the risk of floating debris damaging vessels and river infrastructure.

Earlier this month, volunteers from Friends of Rochester Churchfields and Esplanade said they have a plan to assist with the renovation and reopening of the pier.
