What do you fancy for dinner this evening? A double beef burger with cheese and bacon, stacked between two glazed doughnuts perhaps?

The Double Donut Burger is now on offer at the Hungry Horse chain, which has restaurants in Gillingham, Chatham and Medway Valley Park.

At 1,966 calories, this meal provides 98% of the guideline daily allowance (GDA) for calories.

An adult female is advised to eat 2,000 calories a day, and an adult male, 2,500.

The offering comes as Medway continues to fight its obesity problem with almost one in three adults clinically obese

Cllr Andrew Mackness, chairman of the council’s health and wellbeing board, said: “Anything of this nature is irresponsible.

“Everyone has their choice of what they want to eat, but from a health and wellbeing point of view, it’s not something I think is responsible.”

The burger contains 125g of fat which is 178% GDA, 8.2g of salt (137%) and 53g of sugar.

To compare, a large Big Mac meal from McDonald's, with fries and a drink, is 1,164 calories and a gourmet beef burger meal at Wetherspoons is 1,496 calories.

Steve Jebson, for Hungry Horse, said: “Our popular menu caters for a variety of tastes and appetites and includes everything from lower calorie options such as our hot chicken and bacon salad at 393 calories, through to the indulgent occasional treat such as our new Double Donut Burger.

“All the nutritional information for our menu is available on our website and in our pubs, so that our customers are able to make informed decisions about what they choose to eat.”
